St Johns Shopping Centre
With the new £1bn Liverpool One shopping centre about to open, it was obvious to everyone that the dated 1969 St Johns Shopping Centre in Liverpool City Centre would need to be updated to the 21st century if it was to continue operating.
Owner, Land Securities, has submitted a planning application for a spectacular £100million refurbishment of the centre. If approved, refurbishment would probably start in early 2009.

The proposals include relocating the market in 2010 to the unit currently occupied by JJB Sports, fronting onto the recently revamped Williamson Square. The former market hall would then be used for new shopping units, a food court and a double-height mall.
The Centre as a whole will be comprehensively refurbished to provide a modern environment for Liverpool's shoppers.
The proposals will:
- significantly improve the internal and external appearance of the St Johns Centre
- create a modern shopping environment in keeping with the historic surrounding area
- reassert St Johns as a shopping centre where people choose to shop and are proud to work; and
- improve the public space surrounding the Centre

Briefly, the improvements to St Johns Centre will include:
- a 21st Century Market Facility
- creation of new double-height retail mall
- comprehensive mall refurbishment including new flooring, lighting and toilet facilities
- creation of a new Food Terrace, giving shoppers a place to meet and relax
- the introduction of natural light into the Centre through new atrium spaces
- new glazed retail fronts to all streets
- new entrances and way finding to improve access into the Centre; and
- introduction of art into the Centre
