Project Jennifer

Artist's impression of the new heart of Project Jennifer, North LiverpoolJust outside the south-eastern border of the strategic business area, the Great Homer Street area of North Liverpool is to be improved through a £150 million scheme known as Project Jennifer.

A fully engaged local community has worked with business representatives, regeneration specialists and property developers St. Modwen Properties to draw up comprehensive proposals for the area that will include a new 24 hour Tesco superstore, the largest such store in the city.  The existing Great Homer Street Market will be retained and improved, as well as new community facilities and public buildings being added.  The aim is to turn Great Homer Street into North Liverpool's first and best choice for shopping.

The 45-acre site covers the Scotland Road and Great Homer Street area, including the Taylor Street industrial estate and surrounding property.

The scheme aims to provide a new centre for North Liverpool with improved facilities that will attract new shops and businesses to provide more choice for local people.  The plans also include:-

  • a market stall and outdoor space for 300 stalls.  Traders will be able to open daily and continental markets could also be hosted;
  • modern community facilities including a health centre (with doctors' and dentists' surgeries), and Sure Start Centre;
  • a new library with ground floor shops;
  • a mix of small and large shops with apartments above;
  • almost 500 new houses and flats in Great Homer Street, Scotland Road Marwood Triangle, and the refurbishment of Marwood Towers.  These include one and two-bedroomed flats and three and four-bedroomed houses (some of the new housing schemes, such as Braidwater's Poet's Park (will open a new window) development, are already under construction);
  • relocation of existing businesses and new industrial units in Dryden Street;
  • improvements to Everton Park, including a new entrance and apartments overlooking the open space;
  • traffic calming measures along Great Homer Street.

The main district centre elements will begin in late 2008, and be completed in 2012.

The scheme will help to change the image and perception of North Liverpool, and provide a boost for the area so it can keep on improving into the future.
