Edge Lane - one of the main gateway routes into the city centre - is undergoing a £65m improvement scheme which will transform the route from the M62 to the city centre by road widening to remove bottlenecks and create an environment that demonstrates the aspirations and status of Liverpool as a major European city.
It will be a key component in developing Eastern Approaches as a vibrant and dynamic area to exploit the huge employment growth potential. The project is also key to Liverpool Vision's aspirations for the regeneration of the city centre.
This is the final phase of the Edge Lane Environmental Improvement scheme, and stretches between Hall Lane and Botanic Road. The first three phases between Botanic Road and the Rocket Junction of the M62 were all completed in 2007.
Works will include much-needed new housing and community facilities as well as significant improvements to the local environment with the planting of mature trees and major highway enhancements to provide a safer environment for pedestrians and motorists.
The scheme has been delayed due to reasons that have been highly publicized in the press. However, a second public inquiry is due to begin in January 2008. Liverpool Land Development Company are confident that the outcome will be positive and that the project will commence in 2009.
