Anfield Stadium - Liverpool Football Club
European Champions Liverpool FC are planning a new 60,000-70,000 seater stadium in Stanley Park which will not only provide a new home for the Reds, but also kick start a regeneration programme in North Liverpool.
Planning permission was granted in July 2004 for the first stadium proposals, along with a community centre, access, parking and landscaping. Improvements to Stanley Park - now underway - include the laying out of football pitches, tennis courts and games area, new pathways and upgraded access.
The current stadium site will become a public plaza and be surrounded by apartments, offices, bars, restaurants and a hotel.
Although a newer, larger stadium was announced and new designs released during 2007, in early 2008 the scheme is back on the drawing board due to escalating costs. The new design is due to be announced by the end of January 2008.
In early 2008, Government minister Hazel Blears also confirmed she would not "call in" the scheme for further investigation. This means that when the new planning application is submitted, and if the proposals are accepted, the scheme could commence by the end of this year.
The new stadium will provide a catalyst for regeneration of Anfield/Breckfield. The total jobs accounted for by the new stadium will be 1,692 - making it a major contributor to the economy of North Liverpool.
Across the national economy, the Anfield Stadium and Anfield Plaza development projects will produce 2,800 jobs, roughly one third of which will be in the stadium itself and in new businesses around the Plaza - with the remaining jobs in the surrounding area supporting these people. The construction programme itself is estimated to support a further 187 jobs.
Working with Anfield Breckfield Community Partnership's proposed social enterprises, the goal is to ensure that the maximum number of local jobs are accessed by local people. The local JET and Job Centre Plus, as well as Hope at Everton and Weston Spirit, are already working on specific training programmes make this goal a reality.
