City Centre Movement Strategy
The City Centre Movement Strategy (CCMS) is a £73m programme of works by partners Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Vision and Merseytravel to improve the roads, streets and public spaces in Liverpool city centre.
It is producing dramatic changes and will make Liverpool a smarter, safer and greener city.
CCMS:
- Is creating a high quality public realm in key areas of the city centre to provide a safe environment, attractive to investors, employees, residents and tourists - a centre to be proud of.
- Will provide safe, accessible, pedestrian friendly streets and world class open spaces.
- Builds on the city centre's rich historic character through complementary and contemporary design initiatives.
A thriving City Centre is a key part of the vision set out in the Merseyside Local Transport Plan. Guiding principles of the Plan include development a more attractive and sustainable living environment and giving greater priority to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport on appropriate routes. The Plan also recognises the importance of safety and accessibility. The City Centre Movement Strategy forms part of the Plan.
Individual project in CCMS include:
Covent Garden & East Moorfields
The Cavern Quarter
Greater Williamson Square
Hunter Street & Byrom Street
Renshaw Street & Berry Street
Tithebarn Street
Seymour Street & Copperas Hill
The Strand Corridor
Church Street
Lime Street & Skelhorne Street
Inevitably with such a wide-ranging scheme there is bound to a certain amount of disruption but considerable effort is being made to keep this to a minimum. The impact on the local business community, general public and commuters is assessed before construction starts. Detailed plans on traffic management, programming, consultations, etc are then prepared to reduce, as best as possible the adverse impacts generated by the project.
Updates on progress for individual projects and advice on diversions is available on this website.
