West Tower

Images of the proposed West Tower now under constructionWest Tower is a £21million scheme by the Beetham Organisation which completes the development of the former Eye Hospital site between King Edward Street and Old Hall Street.

The Project is a 40 storey tower with basement for services and car stacker car park, five floors of offices for the Beetham Organisation with high quality apartments for the remaining floors.

The details of the three zones are:

  • basement area to accommodate services and car park stacker
  • five storey offices with horizontal brise soleil and fully glazed enclosure to stair and lift
  • 30 storeys of apartments (4 per floor) plus 5 storey raking penthouse apartment floors with external terraces.

The Old Hall Street Eye Hospital on the site had been demolished in the late 1990's, and the site used as a temporary car park.  Only some old derelict cottages that had been part of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal Basin remained.

Since February 2002 the Beetham Organisation have developed the site to include a five star hotel, 30 storey luxury apartment block, health club and swimming pool together with a fully occupied office block whose tenants are a government agency and computer work processing centre.  The cottages were retained and now house the Radisson Hotel's bar.  The West Tower is the last part of the site to be developed.

The overall development has improved the visual impact of this area of the city has brought an internationally known hotel group to the city and ensured employment requirements for an outsourced operation remained in the city.  It has also brought residential living back into the city centre.

The site is a Considerate Constructors site, and as such makes efforts to protect and enhance the local community, minimising unwelcome effects.  The vast majority of site personnel are from Merseyside.

There will be a strict plan on deliveries of materials to the site to ensure traffic disruption is kept to a minimum, all deliveries will be via a closed off lane of King Edward Street, this lane will only be introduced after the rush hour each day (after 9.30am).

A construction phase Travel Plan has been developed to set out how the workforce will be encouraged to use public transport when travelling to the site. This is one of the requirements of the Planning Consent.  A Travel Plan will also be developed for the completed development.

Work is expected to be complete by Autumn 2007.
