PowerSystems - Liverpool City Centre Reinforcement

The high level of regeneration in Liverpool will see a massive increase in electricity demand.

Liverpool Vision through its Strategic Framework for Regeneration is predicting an increase of some 50MW by 2009.

To cater for demand increases of this magnitude will require extensive reinforcement of the distribution system, at all voltage levels, in the City Centre area.

It is proposed to reinforce the 132kV system by the addition of a cable circuit from the Lister Drive Supergrid substation to a new grid substation at Sparling Street, which is next to the waterfront.

This substation will also be connected into the existing Burlington Street to Paradise Street 132kV cable circuit. It is proposed to reinforce the 33kV system with the addition of two grid transformers located at Lister Drive and the new substation at Sparling Street, supported by a major reconfiguration of the 33kV cable networks at both Lister Drive and Sparling Street.

Work started in February 2004 and is expected to be finished by the end of 2006.
