Pier Head Public Realm Works
The Council has developed a master plan and secured funding to redevelop the public open space at the Pier Head and Mann Island to integrate the many new waterfront developments - The Liverpool Canal Link, new Cruise liner Facility, new Mersey ferry terminal, new Museum of Liverpool and the mixed use scheme at Mann Island being delivered by Neptune Developments and Countryside Properties.
In February 2007 the council acquired the Shanghai Place Chinese restaurant using funding from the North West Development Agency. This has since been stripped of asbestos and demolished by Mersey travel to make way for the new Mersey ferry facility.
The public realm works at Pier Head valued at £5m are being delivered in partnership with British Waterways as part of the Liverpool Canal Link project. The scheme includes for the creation of sheltered seating areas around the two open canal basins and a central lawn in front of the Cunard Building. A central space at the north of the site will be available as events space and the riverside walkway will be retained. The project includes new tree planting to recreate the Canada Boulevard, generous amounts of seating and an innovative lighting scheme.
Funding for the works is from North West Development Agency and ERDF via the Merseyside Objective One programme. The works are currently being implemented and are expected to complete in late summer 2008.
Further public realm works will be delivered around the canal basin at Mann Island to create a sheltered seating space and a plaza for outdoor seating associated with adjacent cafes and restaurants. These works will be delivered by Neptune Developments and Countryside Properties with funding from North West Development Agency and are due for completion in 2010.
