Mann Island

Various views of the Mann Island proposalsA £112m development which will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors is planned for the Pier Head on a site at Mann Island.

It consists of the following elements:-

  • A new Museum of Liverpool
  • 110,000 sq ft office space with underground parking with about 500 spaces
  • Covered Public Space - approximately 20,000 sq ft
  • Canal link
  • Quality public realm linkage with Albert Dock and city centre
  • Residential development

Alongside the museum will be a mixed use residential/commercial/leisure development of some 592,000 square feet.   There will be two new builds for residential use with ariound 350 apartments and a single development of 110,000 square feet commercial/office use which will also include an underground car park with an estimated 500 spaces.

It is intended that the mixed use development is designed in keeping with the museum and canal and of appropriate scale with open and covered public spaces. This space provides an area for organised or informal events and will help maintain a pleasant and safe environment and will animate the area, increasing its business confidence.

The scheme aims to bring a new breath of life back to a previously low quality waterfront space.  Located next to the Three Graces, it will become a major cultural attraction providing a world class visitor experience centred around an iconic design building.

As part of the public realm improvements, new linkages to the city centre and the Albert Dock are being created, inevitably bringing with them an increase in pedestrian foot traffic creating new leisure and retail opportunities ,It is believed that approximately 890 new jobs will be created, both directly and indirectly, as a result of this world class development.

The new covered public space and the intended recreational waterfront uses provide great opportunities for outdoor leisure. This means that visitors will be able to enjoy the development on every turn.

Planning permission has been granted for this development with a start on building work anticipated for Summer 2006 and a final completion date at the end of 2009.
