Hunter Street & Byrom Street/CCMS Project
This £1.2m scheme - part of the City Centre Movement Strategy - was completed in April 2005 and took about six months. It involved widening the highways, improving junctions, resurfacing and including the installation of new road signs and gantries.
This scheme is aimed at attracting traffic away from Dale Street to make way for Merseytram and to make life better for pedestrians.
The detailed elements of the scheme involved:
- Adding an additional lane to Hunter Street through realignment of kerbs.
- Adding an additional lane to Byrom Street southbound left turn by moving the offside kerb line and to Byrom Street northbound by shaving central reservation, providing an additional left turn lane into Leeds Street.
- An extra right-turn from Scotland Road southbound into Leeds Street.
The work will allow the closure of the Churchill Way (South) Flyover to general traffic and they have improved the capacity of Byrom Street at its junction with Hunter Street and Scotland Road at its junction with Leeds Street.
