Prescot Road Bridge Renewal Works
Network Rail strengthened a railway bridge on Prescot Road - between Newton Road and Prescot Drive - to allow it to carry new 40 tonne vehicles in line with European directives.
The work involved replacing temporary concrete slabs, which had been in place for some time at the bridge and which reduced the width of the carriageway, with a permanent concrete slab across its whole width.
In the long term, the strengthened bridge will require minimum maintenance and increase the capacity of a main arterial route into and out of the city. It will also be environmentally beneficial as it will eliminate the congestion which has resulted from the narrowing of the bridge's capacity.
