Great George's Square Apartments, Maisonettes and Town Houses
Great George's Square has recently undergone a transformation and is seen by local residents as both a focal point for the neighbourhood and as a symbol of the improvements being introduced into the L1 area.
This development, by the Maritime Housing Association is on the neighbouring site at 30-35 Great George Square and 22-28 White Street, and complements the newly refurbished square and significantly improves the physical appearance of the area as a whole.
It consists of 34 apartments and three maisonettes in the main terrace block fronting Great George Square (shared ownership), and six family houses (for rent) in the rear terrace, originally fronting White Street. White Street was included in the site area and become the gardens to the houses. Closure of this street was approved by the Highways Department.
The main block is of steel frame construction and tied to the existing listed façade. The floor levels have been slightly adjusted to allow for the insertion of galleries to first and second floor levels. The three maisonettes are located at ground and lower ground floor levels, with access via the existing front doors and steps. Apartments to the first and second floors of the front part of the main terrace have galleried lounges, allowing views of the newly refurbished and landscaped square.
The front façade has been retained in its present form, but with replacement timber sash windows and replacements doors to match the original. All the other historic features, including cornices, band courses and sills have been made good and re-set or aligned as necessary. All brickwork and stonework has been repaired and re-pointed in accordance with City Council and English Heritage guidance.
The six storey rear block which backs onto the rebuilt front section of the original terrace takes advantage of the natural slope of the site, and includes an entrance at the lower ground floor level, directly from the car park, which provides parking for 15 cars.
The three storey mews houses to the rear of the site have been treated similarly to the main block, in a combination of multi-red brick facings, aluminium windows and balconies, with ground floor to the car park side in stone render.
It was completed in June 2006.
