CCMS - Lime Street Gateway
One of the key aims of the City Centre Movement Strategy is to reduce traffic on Lime Street in front of the Rail Station and to improve pedestrian links between the station and the city centre.
This scheme had the effect of achieving both of these by reducing the overall highway width, removing the existing central reservations and providing additional pedestrian crossing points.
The highway scheme is linked to the adjacent development of the station frontage. This development will remove the existing shops and office block fronting the station and replace these with a world class public realm area which will provide a more welcoming feel for visitors to the city. To achieve the required space, the area will be increased in conjunction with reduction of the highway width.
This scheme follows on from the recent reversal of traffic flow on Skelhorne Street which was essential to complete the traffic flow characteristics in this part of the city centre.
The £1.9m highway scheme was completed in May 2007, creating a safer, more accessible and higher quality environment for all users including:
- Pedestrians through an improved and safer public realm;
- Businesses/retailers and investors through an enhanced environment for trade;
- Residents, visitors, employees and shoppers through an enhanced external environment.
The increased footfall and environmental improvements will reap economic benefits to the city centre population through increased turnover, increased property demand and value and job creation.
