Bluecoat Arts Centre

Bluecoat Chambers in summer 2003, before the current refurbishment commencedBluecoat Arts Centre has developed the oldest building in Liverpool city centre as an exciting arts, heritage, cultural business and retail complex for the 21st Century.

This £9.75 million scheme secured the future of one of the city's best-loved buildings, retaining its special qualities while addressing its access and accommodation issues

The historic fabric of this Grade One listed building has been restored, creating a new wing housing and art gallery and performance space and reorganise existing spaces to create better access throughout.

New, enlarged facilities present the best in contemporary visual and performing arts, and community events. Retail spaces, cultural business offices and artists' studios have been improved. New and improved function and meeting rooms are now available for hire.

Bluecoat's unique history is being brought to life through a heritage display. The garden has been enhanced, retaining its special quality as a place to relax in the heart of the city. Access, including lifts to the upper floors, has also been dramatically improved.

Architects BIQ Architecten from Rotterdam were chosen from an open competition, and led a design team that includes Chester-based architects Donald Insall Associates, who will carry out the conservation work. Planning permission and listed building consent have been granted.

Work started in April 2004 and completed in Spring 2008.
