Flyover lightens up

(Released: 03 March 2009)

Work is to get under way shortly on a lighting scheme for the Churchill Way flyover in Liverpool city centre.

This is part of the feature lighting programme in which prominent buildings and structures have been illuminated. Among the buildings which have been lit up are St George's Hall, the Three Graces and the Cathedrals.

The scheme involves the lighting of the southern fly-over's central columns, the underside of the central flyover and the south parapet handrails.

It will cost £210,000 which will be funded though a grant from the NorthWest Regional Development Agency.

Cllr Peter Millea, Executive Member for Assets and Development, said:

"We have seen how effective lighting schemes can be on structures like this.  The flyover at the Rocket has been transformed and has become an attractive route at night.

"The Churchill Way flyover is one of the key routes into the city centre and we believe this scheme will have the same effect as at the Rocket.

"The feature lighting programme has given the city a much more attractive night-time environment and this latest scheme will add to that."

The work will be undertaken by Enterprise-Liverpool and is expected to be completed by the end of March.
