Electronic Message Signs Go Live!
Electronic message signs are being switched on around Liverpool and Merseyside to help motorists avoid any problems on the roads and to find their way to attractions. The Variable Messaging Signs are being been put up in 17 city centre locations with 19 more going up further afield, including in Wirral and on the M62. Messages will appear on the signs to provide motorists with information about road conditions, accidents, unusual congestion and to direct traffic to more appropriate routes.
The first messages that will appear on the city centre signs will be directing motorists to use the Wallasey Tunnel to get to the Open Golf Championship at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, Wirral.
Cllr Peter Millea, Liverpool City Council's Executive Member for Regeneration and Transport, explained:
"The signs are all located on busy roads and our whole transport network is constantly monitored. Now we have the technology to get information out to motorists on the road to help them to reach their destinations as quickly and as safely as possible.
"It is very appropriate that our first messages are helping motorists onto the best route to the Open Golf Championship as it demonstrates how closely the Merseyside authorities and Merseytravel are working together on the Local Transport Plan."
