Work starts on Church Street improvements
Work to transform the Church Street - Lord Street area began on Monday, 15th May.
The first phase of the construction work has started in Lord Street with the work being carried out in sections to minimise disruption to businesses, retailers and pedestrians.
The £5.5 million scheme in this key retail area of the city has been funded by Liverpool City Council, the NorthWest Development Agency, the European Regional Development Fund, and Cityfocus.
The main aim of the scheme is to improve the pedestrian areas with new high quality granite paving, new street lighting, new street 'furniture', (benches and litter bins), and the planting of 33 new mature 9 metre tall trees.
The concept for the scheme is 'The Ribbons of Life', representing the social, cultural and economic aspects of Liverpool and its people. The ribbon theme will be visible in the paving and the street furniture. Sculptural elements will also reflect this theme.
The work has been coordinated with Telewest cabling works which will begin on Church Street in two phases which started on Tuesday, 30th May.
Councillor Peter Millea, Executive Member for Regeneration, said:
"We are delighted that another CCMS scheme is about to start on site, improving and regenerating our city centre for our citizens, businesses and visitors. This is a much needed revamp to our core retail area and we will be working hard to keep disruption to a minimum following the extensive consultation that has already taken place with businesses and retailers in the area".
Liverpool City Council will continue to work very closely with the Business Improvement District to ensure that everything is done to keep disruption to a minimum.
