Proposals to change traffic network in City Centre (October 2005)
Liverpool City Council's proposals to pedestrianise Castle Street and change the direction of some roads in the area are going on display to the public next week.
The exhibition will be on display at the Town Hall on Tuesday, 25th and Wednesday, 26th October 2005 from 10am to 6.30pm, Thursday, 27th from 10am to 4.30pm and on Friday, 28th from 10am to 4pm at the 08 Place, Whitechapel.
The proposals are part of the City Centre Movement Strategy, a £73 million scheme by partners Liverpool City Council, Merseytravel and Liverpool Vision to make the City Centre a safer and cleaner environment for everyone.
The work is programmed to begin in 2006 with Castle Street pedestrianised by 2007.
The proposed changes are designed to encourage through traffic to avoid the heart of the City Centre and to use Hunter Street, Byrom Street, Leeds Street and The Strand, rather than Dale Street and Victoria Street. This will mean those who need to use these streets for access purposes, and the large number of pedestrians in this area, will find it easier to move around.
The proposals include making Castle Street one way northbound with the section from Brunswick Street to Dale Street closed to all traffic between 10am and 6pm, creating a high quality public space in front of our Town Hall.
Traffic direction would change on North John Street and Churchill Way Flyover with access to the flyover and parts of Lord Street and North John Street restricted.
Full details of these and all other proposed changes, including parking and loading facilities, will be on display next week with members of the project team on hand to answer any questions.
Councillor Peter Millea, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: "These proposals aim to improve the environment for everyone who uses the City Centre, in vehicles or on foot.
"The changes have been carefully considered and these proposals are the result of detailed work to establish what is needed to improve traffic flow in these areas and create a quality public space in front of our Town Hall.
"This exhibition gives everyone the chance to have their say about our proposals and we look forward to receiving those views."
