Tithebarn Street going fully two way on completion

Tithebarn Street going fully two way for certain traffic from 27 February 2006Two way traffic now runs along the entire length of Tithebarn Street and Chapel Street, from Vauxhall Road to The Strand.

The final phase of this scheme, a bus lane for buses, taxis and cyclists to travel towards The Strand, was opened on Chapel Street, from Bixteth Street to The Strand, in February 2006.

The change is aimed at improving access to the Commercial Quarter of the City Centre as part of the City Centre Movement Strategy which is a £73m scheme to improve the roads and public areas of Liverpool, developed by partners Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Vision and Merseytravel.

The Tithebarn Street scheme cost £3.1 million and includes work on footpath improvements and resurfacing the road.  Facilities for pedestrians have been greatly improved with better footpaths and more pedestrian crossings, as well as new facilities for cyclists.

The traffic signals have also been improved at the junctions and new traffic signals have been installed at Bixteth Street and Pall Mall.

The North West Development Agency provided £2 million towards the cost of the Tithebarn Street scheme with the rest of the funding coming from Liverpool City Council, Merseytravel and City Focus.

Councillor Peter Millea, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: "We are delighted to see yet another CCMS project finish on programme and deliver such high quality work to improve the environment for all of us.

"We would ask pedestrians in particular to take care while crossing Tithebarn Street and Chapel Street until they get used to the new traffic direction.

"I would like to thank everyone involved on this scheme for their hard work and to thank the local businesses and the public for their patience while the work was carried out."
