New funding for Housing Market Renewal awarded
The Housing Market Renewal Programme that is regenerating Merseyside's run-down housing areas has been awarded a further £152million by the government for the next two year period up to 2010.
The cash comes on top of the £112million previously awarded to the Newheartlands housing pathfinder for work between 2006-2008, and the £56million granted in the first two years of the 15 year programme in 2004-2006. Newheartlands has responsibility for revitalising housing in parts of the city of Liverpool, as well as similar areas in Sefton and Wirral who will also have a share of the £152million funding.
The bulk of the money is being spent on refurbishment of existing homes, but some will be spent on demolishing properties deemed to be beyond repair.
Although this brings the total amount of government cash since the start of the HMRI programme to £320million, many more millions will be invested by the private sector partners building new homes for Merseyside residents.
The government's announcement made at the end of February 2008 was welcomed by community leaders and housing officials.
Newheartlands' managing director Pauline Davis said:
"This is good news for our residents across Merseyside. The minister has recognised the progress we have made and the strength of our plans over the next three years."
