Motorists warned against illegal left turn

Motorists are endangering the lives of pedestrians by making illegal left turns out of Vernon Street onto Tithebarn Street.

The junction is a right-turn only and is fully sign-posted to that effect with a kerb line that directs motorists to turn right.

However a small number of motorists are negotiating the built out kerb to turn left and the sequence of the traffic lights means they are turning onto a pedestrian crossing while it is on green.

Liverpool City Council are now looking at ways to build the kerb out even further and are examining the sequence of the traffic lights. The only alternative would be to keep all lights on red while pedestrians cross but this will cause delays for all vehicles on Tithebarn Street.

Police officers have been monitoring the junction to prevent motorists from making the dangerous manoeuvre which is a drain on public resources.

Councillor Peter Millea, Executive Member for Regeneration, said:

"The signs and the layout of the junction makes it very clear that motorists can only turn right however a small number are ignoring this and illegally turning left. This is an extremely dangerous action and puts the lives of pedestrians at risk.

"We are working with Merseyside Police to enforce this junction but we need motorists to follow the signs and only turn right out of Vernon Street.

"We are doing all we can to make it as difficult as possible to turn left but the obvious solution is for motorists to obey the law and the road signs."
