Major facelift for The Rocket junction

Artist's impression of the improved Rocket junction

DATE OF ORIGINAL RELEASE: 2 August 2007

One of the key routes into Liverpool City Centre is to receive a major facelift.  The project at the Rocket junction at the end of the M62 motorway is part of the Edge Lane corridor regeneration scheme.

The Rocket is one of the most important gateways into the city, and gives many visitors their first impression of Liverpool.

This new project is designed to improve safety and security, and will also involve cleaning and treating the Queens Drive flyover.  New artwork and feature lighting will also be installed to enhance the appearance of the flyover, including lighting effects at night.

The subways will be refurbished and enhanced with new security features, whilst existing crossing points will be improved.  New trees and shrubs will be planted, and pedestrian fencing and other street furniture will be either replaced or introduced at key locations.

The road carriageways will be upgraded with new traffic signals, signage and road markings.

Our leaflet about the projectThe works, beginning from early August, will be completed by the end of December 2007.  Most of the work will be carried out during the day, but some work will need to be carried out at night.  Some full-lane closures with carriageways totally closed in one direction will be necessary for two or three nights - and details of when this will happen will be announced nearer the time.

At other times, in-bound and out-bound carriageways will be closed one at a time between the hours of 9.30am and 3.30pm.  Diversions will be in place via Childwall Five Ways or Old Swan.
