Lord Street/North John Street junction to close for 14 weeks
The Lord Street/North John Street junction will be closed to traffic from Sunday 27th January 2008 for 14 weeks to improve transport access to the Liverpool One development which is due to be completed this summer.
When Liverpool One opens, the section of North John Street between Lord Street and Victoria Street will become two way (it is currently one way only). The scheme will also see new bus stops created outside the new Debenhams store, new traffic signals and improved pedestrian crossings.
As part of the closure whilst the works take place, buses will be diverted along Castle Street and Cook Street where temporary bus stops will be located. Pay and display parking in Cook Street will be suspended during this time.
This work is part of the £2.2m Castle Street Enabling Works project, the latest phase of the £73m City Centre Movement Strategy funded partly through the European Regional Development Fund and the Northwest Regional Development Agency.
The completed scheme will see:
- traffic flow being reversed in the section of North John Street between Dale Street and Victoria Street;
- two-way traffic being introduced on North John Street between Victoria Street and Lord Street
- traffic flows being reversed in Stanley Street and Cumberland Street, both of which are comparatively lightly used;
- completion of granite paving in sections of Mathew Street, Harrington Street and Temple Court in the Cavern Quarter.
Cllr Mike Storey, Executive Member for Regeneration, said:
"This work is essential as part of the overall scheme. We are working closely with local businesses to keep them informed about progress and listening to their views."
