Accolade for new Liver Street Multistorey Car Park
Released: 21 December 2005
Despite only having been opened a month, one of the Paradise Project's first buildings to be completed has been highly praised today. The new Liver Street Multistorey Car Park next to Canning Place has been judged to be the second best car park in the country.
The Liverpool Daily Post (local newspaper) reports that motoring guru Kevin Beresford has compiled a league table of the best motorist-friendly car parks in Britain whilst he was conducting research for AA Insurance.
The Liver Street Car Park was designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre, the firm that also produced the award-winning Millennium Bridge across the Tyne at Newcastle.
The nearby Albert Dock car park also makes the top ten list, positioned at number 5, praised for its "ripping retro feel".
Birmingham based Mr Beresford reportedly said: "The new car park at Liver Street/Canning Place oozed class and is adorned with steel Venetian blinds and speedy external ramps. My white glove test would have impressed my mother-in-law. You could have eaten off the floor of this car park. It looks superb and has tremendous views of the city and the river. "
Although it is quirky to look at car parks there is a serious side because safety and comfort come into it. The better planned and operated the car park, the less likelihood there is of the car being damaged or broken into.
"I believe the new Liver Street car park at Canning Place sets the standard for what all car parks of the future should be like".
Topping the list is a car park in Kings Lynn, with the car park at Edinburgh Airport in third place. The Albert Dock car park was judged fifth in Mr Beresford's premier league.
John Pearson, Q-parks Liverpool business manager, said: "This car park is the start of the experience for visitors to Liverpool. We are delighted with this praise for our new car park."
A spokesman for Liverpool City Council said: "We are delighted with these accolades. In our car parks we look not just at parking space, but at quality and safety. The new Liver Street car park reflects the high quality of design around the Paradise Street area."
