James Street interchange works begin
James Street was closed to outbound traffic from Tuesday 29th May as the £2 million new city centre bus and train interchange scheme got underway.
The project - a joint scheme between the City Council and Merseytravel - will continue through the summer. The first phase will be completed at the end of August 2007.
The improvements are needed to improve transport links, particularly to the new arena and convention centre at Kings Dock, as well as to the £1bn Liverpool One retail and leisure scheme by Grosvenor.
Cllr Mark Dowd, chairman of Merseytravel, said:
"James Street is already an important interchange and, as the city grows towards 2008 and beyond, it will become even more so. The aim is to improve public transport facilities for everyone using James Street, whether they are visiting, living or working in the city."
Work includes widening the footpath outside the station and constructing waiting areas for bus passengers.
During the changes, James Street will remain one-way, with no traffic - buses or other vehicles - allowed to journey from Queens Square to the waterfront Strand. Instead, the street will be one-way from The Strand towards Lord Street.
The five bus stops outside James Street station will close during the work period, with most buses switched to Lord Street and Castle Street.
Merseytravel has produced a leaflet for commuters (will open a new window) showing how the temporary arrangements will operate.
