James Street Station surface entrance closed until mid April for refurbishment

How the front of James Street station will look(Originally released: 27/02/08)

Merseyrail's James Street Station surface entrance will be closed until mid April 2008 for a major refurbishment.

The entrance off James Street itself will be affected by the works.  This is the entrance accessed by the lifts.

Although the Water Street entrance will remain open throughout the works, it has a series of steps and a long steep ramp - both of which are not suitable for people with limited mobility. Passengers are advised to use Moorfields Station where possible as this does have lifts to the Wirral Line platform.

The scheme at James Street will include improvements to the station booking hall and access to/from the station.  Although the booking hall cannot be increased in size, it will be opened up through the use of glass to the front of the building.  The ticket office and retail kiosk will be redesigned, with the option to provide a fully accessible toilet.

Access ramps and relocated steps to the front of the building, together with automatic doors into the booking hall, will improve accessibility.

Recladding to the outside of the building, including the connecting alleyway to Moor Street and the rear of the building, will complement these works and the recently completed public realm works on Moor Street.

A small canopy will also be built directly over the station entrance, covering the full length between the 'Liverpool' public house and the entrance to Moor House. This will give the station more prominence on the street and improve the weather protection for both bus and rail passengers.
