Final phase of major works at The Strand underway
(Released: 19/02/08)
The final phase of major works at The Strand in Liverpool city centre is underway.
It will see the creation of two supercrossings at the junction with James Street - giving pedestrians more time to cross the road to and from the Pier Head - along with better street lighting.
The work started on 4th February and is scheduled to be completed in time for the opening of the first phase of the £1 billion Liverpool One retail and leisure development at the end of May 2008.
The work will mean the right turn from the Strand into Mann Island will be prohibited. Traffic from the north will be able to access the Pier Head area via Brunswick Street.
There will be a number of lane closures throughout the work.
Cllr Mike Storey, Executive Member for Regeneration, said:
"This work is needed as the new crossings replace the footbridge which was removed before Christmas and we are seeking balanced forms of transport in the city centre, meeting the needs of motorists, public transport and pedestrians.
"This is the final phase of the major works on the Strand - and I know lots of motorists will be cheering the fact that the end of this work is in sight. But it has largely been connected with the major developments in the city - creating the underground car park for the Liverpool One development, for example.
"There will be round-the-clock work to ensure that the deadline is met and while we will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum there will have to be some lane closures throughout the work."
