Completion of work around Lime Street Station

The start of Lime Street at its junction with Renshaw Street where most traffic is now diverted up Copperas HillThe City Centre Movement Strategy Scheme on Skelhorne Street, next to Lime Street Station, is now nearing completion and the traffic flow changed direction on Monday, 26th June 2006.

The £650,000 scheme to upgrade the area and change the direction of traffic on Skelhorne Street to run from Copperas Hill down to Lime Street, and the traffic on Bolton Street to run from Skelhorne Street to Copperas Hill, will improve general road safety and access to Lime Street Station and public transport.

The CCMS scheme has also installed a bus lane on the section of Lime Street which runs from the Adelphi junction to Skelhorne Street. Buses and taxis only will be able to use this northbound section of Lime Street with all other traffic directed up Copperas Hill. Traffic needing access to Lime Street Station or St John's Car Park will travel down Skelhorne Street.

A new bus stop to serve the airport and ferry terminal has also been installed and the crossing facilities at Lime Street have been upgraded.

The scheme has been designed to draw traffic away from Lime Street and to ensure motorists use the improved route up Copperas Hill and onto Seymour Street. This will reduce congestion on Lime Street for the benefit of travellers arriving at Lime Street station and visitors enjoying St George's Plateau.

Motorists are reminded that a left turn into Ranelagh Street from Renshaw Street is illegal and is only for buses, taxis, cyclists and loading access.

The works on Skelhorne Street are the final piece of the City Centre Movement Strategy jigsaw in this area after work completed on Renshaw Street and Berry Street, Seymour Street and Copperas Hill at the end of 2005.

Cllr Peter Millea, Liverpool City Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, explained:

"This is a vital scheme to help traffic to move safely around this busy area of our City Centre. Lime Street Train Station is a key gateway into the city and we want people using the station to be able to access it safely and to easily link up with bus services. Yet again it has finished on time and on budget.  We ask pedestrians and motorists to take great care while everyone gets used to the changes."
